About us

Bini srl materie prime, founded in 1960, is one of the longest-standing companies (or trade companies) in the Italian recovered paper market. A family-run business that has kept its identity intact while guaranteeing the highest product quality and professionalism, and has embraced the challenges of globalisation with enthusiasm.

We are always ready to get in touch with Italian and international companies to share new opportunities for growth and collaboration.

The historical context

Italy is one of the countries that contributed most to the development of papermaking techniques: even before the 18th century there were mills making paper from the fibres of macerated rags.

In Tuscany – and in particular in the province of Lucca – many important production sites were established, above all at the beginning of the 20th century.

The paper mills of Lucca

In the early 1960s many mills flourished in what would become known as the Paper Mills Valley: after the war there were more than thirty family-run paper mills in the famous Lucca triangle, between the municipalities of Bagni di Lucca, Borgo a Mozzano and Villa Basilica.

The Bini family comes from one of these places: Ponte a Villa, near Villa Basilica. It was a humble family, carried on by Mrs Gina, mother of four children including Ugo, who was widowed when she was still very young.

A tough sector

A few years later another paper district, just as important as the valley, grew up around the municipalities of Porcari and Capannori. At that time production was based on straw paper, also called yellow paper, and wood pulp; the new plants began to make packaging paper from recovered paper.

It was right then, between the late 1950s and the early 1960s, that Mr Ugo – after several jobs, including managing the Fabbriche paper mill in Bagni di Lucca – decided to start his own recovered paper business. Meanwhile he married Mrs Silvia Bertolini, who also came from a family of papermakers in Villa Basilica.

Soon Bini Ugo & Figli srl expanded beyond the Lucca area, building relationships in Bologna and, gradually, with most of the cities of northern Italy.

In more recent years

The paper industry has always suffered from unstable prices, because of the economic cycle and the laws regulating the waste sector – namely the collection and recycling of raw materials. Over more than fifty years of activity the Bini family went through times of great growth followed by sudden market downturns.

The company came through it all and kept growing, above all thanks to Ugo’s son, Luca Giovanni, who widened the customer base and handled many difficult moments with tenacity and great foresight. After the founder’s death the company evolved from Bini Ugo & Figli srl into Bini srl, and the family’s third generation joined the business.
